During my last visit to Bordeaux earlier this month, I stopped by to visit La Winery after meeting one of it’s representatives in Paris the day before.

The concept is the lasted venture of Philippe Raoux, a 4th generation wine merchant who was inspired by what he saw in Napa. The multi-million dollar wine center has been open for a couple of years now, and offers wine tastings, a restaurant, chateaux visits and the unique “Wine Sign”.

The concept is represented by a very contemporary, light filled space outside of Bordeaux on the way to the Medoc, and is equally contemporary in nature. The art of wine tasting is elevated by different activities within the center, and highlighted by a permanent collection of major works of contemporary artists such Jean Fabre, Bernard Pages, Roy Lichtenstein, ect.

The restaurant Le Wy offers a contemporary palate with a relaxed atmosphere, with the benefit of a top-rated chef and sommelier. I had the wine tasting lunch which was perfect in proportion and pairing, and Philippe was kind enough to stop by and help explain his passion and vision for the center. What I really enjoyed was not only the quality of the food (at a very reasonable price point) but the subtle and non-pretentioous presentation which enhances the experience and allows you to take it all in.

The most unique concept is the Wine Sign session. Here you taste 6 wines with running commentary by a professional, and by choosing which wines you prefer with a vote box, your personal wine sign and wine recommendations are given to you in a personalized cellar book according to your preferences.

There are also wine makers’ dinners, tours of the Chateau d’Arsac also owned by Mr. Raoux, and a boutique/cellar of over 1000 labels, wine tasting options and a lovely acoustically enhanced reception room perfect for concerts.

All in all a really nice stop and a great compliment to the grand chateaux Bordeaux is known for. Here, wine is presented under different facets and open to all looking for a different view of how to appreciate wine. We look forward to having our clients discover this new take on wine tourism in Bordeaux.
