Why not let this be the year that you visit a wine château or two? You deserve it, and you will deepen your appreciation for fine wines. And there is always a wonderful sense of occasion behind visiting a wine château. You will long remember entering those château gates into the winemaker’s world, and then of course your visit, the tasting, and the inside information that the winemaker was glad to share with you. You will only wonder why it took so long to make your first visit to the region of wine châteaux.

One of my favorite wine memories is a bicycle trip through Alsace some forty years ago. It was a hot summer day, and we cycled through picturesque villages, some with storks nesting on the roofs of half-timbered houses. We came to the town of Riquewihr, and were welcomed at what local vintners called the “Riquewihr metro:” caves where the thirsty traveler could enjoy a cool, refreshing glass of Alsatian white wine.

With prices for Bordeaux grands crus wines spiraling out of sight, wine lovers want to get the most for their money. What the French call “le rapport qualité/prix” is more important than ever. One good strategy is to explore the world of second wines now being made by nearly every classified Bordeaux estate, east or west of the Gironde.

The scenic Beaujolais region, just south of Burgundy between Mâcon and Lyon, is four hours from Paris by car, and just half an hour from Lyon. It is full of vineyards, shops where the wines may be tasted, and bistros where the wines accompany French tavern food. It also boasts village bistros and B and Bs, coexisting with world class resorts, such as the Château de Bagnols...

There are so many wonderful things to do in Paris. Any guidebook or internet article will lead you to the top things you must see while in Paris. But what if you want to enjoy a more off the beaten path activity?

The Loire Valley is a region of architectural treasures, with scenery that will delight you at every turn. And since the purest French is spoken at Tours, no wonder famous writers such as Balzac, Ronsard, Rabelais and Jules Verne have lived here, and taken the Loire Valley as a setting for their work. They surely also enjoyed the delicious regional cuisine, and a choice of tasty wines to go with their selection.
